Postofficepincode.com was founded in 1997, according to its history. Following the invention of television, the Internet brought to the emergence of new IT-savvy entrepreneurs and the formation of alliances between non-IT enterprises. The goal was to build a factory that could produce websites for the Indian market on any topic and in any price range.
On August 15, 1998, the Postofficepincode team released their first project, Postofficepincode.com. The website was intended to take over as the go-to resource for information on India. It began by offering travel information,
Yahoo Search Engine and submission dominated in those early days. India had a meager online presence, and locating maps of the country was difficult. Less than 2000 unique Indian websites were listed in Yahoo's India profile, and there was no subdirectory for maps of India in the Yahoo Indian directory. Given the potential of Maps of India, Yahoo worked with Yahoo India to establish the Maps & Views sub-directory. A directory structure for Indian states and union territories was produced by cross-routing with Yahoo. In order to encourage collaboration, Yahoo gave Maps of India a spot in each category of its new directory structure. The new directory structure specifically gave Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana, and the entire North East extra consideration.
